The second season of Jujutsu Kaisen has just started with Gojo’s Past Arc; in it, we know that the primary villain will be Toji Fushiguro. Toji Foshiguro is unique in many ways, which is why fans have developed an interest in him, and since he has finally made his anime debut, we can continue answering some burning questions about the guy as the story of Jujutsu Kaisen keeps evolving. Now, at the end of the first episode of the second season of Jujutsu Kaisen, Shiu Kong offers a job to Toji, calling him Zenin, but Toji replies that he goes by the name Fushiguro before accepting the job. So, is Toji a Zenin or a Fushiguro? In this article, we will give you a definitive answer to that question.

Toji Fushiguro is the primary villain of the Gojo’s Past Arc and would reappear later as a secondary antagonist. Although he actually goes by the name Toji Fushiguro, he was actually born as Toji Zenin into the powerful Zenin clan but was, like Maki, born with Heavenly Restriction, which rendered him completely devoid of cursed energy. At one point, Toji Zenin left his clan, denounced his name, and took the mane Fushiguro, the family name of his first wife and Megumi’s mother, as he did not want to have anything to do with the Zenin clan anymore.

The rest of this article will focus on Toji Foshiguro and his personal history in the Jujutsu Kaisen series. Toji Foshiguro is a popular villain in the series, and he played a strikingly important role in two arcs, although we’re going to focus on his story in the Gojo’s Past Arc Here. His story interests all fans, so we will reveal what happened to him in this article. This article will contain some spoilers from the Jujutsu Kaisen manga, so be careful how you approach it.

Toji Fushiguro was born Toji Zenin, but he left his family and denounced them, becoming Fushiguro later in life

So, to answer this question, we have to actually go back to Toji’s past. Fans of the manga will know the whole story, but anime fans might be a tad confused. Namely, let us return to the ending of the anime’s first episode of Season 2. As Geto and Gojo took care of the two Q members who wanted to kill Riko, Toji and Shiu Kong from the Time Vessel Association observed the fight from a nearby building.

After it was over, Shiu Kong offered Toji a job, which Toji accepted, but this is where the situation became confusing. Namely, Shiu Kong called Toji “Zenin,” which was a shocking revelation that connected him to one of the series’ best-known clans, but Toji immediately replied that he was not a Zenin and that he went by the name “Fushiguro,” which connected him to Megumi, one of the series’ protagonists.

So, was Shiu Kong wrong or is Toji lying? Well – neither; Shiu Kong was correct in calling Toji “Zenin,” but, at the same time, Toji was right when he said that he was not a Zenin but rather “Fushiguro.” So, what happened here? What’s the story?

Before we get into the details, we will tell you quickly that Toji Fushiguro is Megumi’s father and a former member of the Zenin Clan. He was actually born as Toji Zenin, and, similar to Maki, he was born with a Heavenly Restriction, which rendered him completely devoid of cursed energy.

To compensate for this handicap, he has gained superhuman physical abilities and highly developed senses, enabling him to see and sense cursed spirits. While he was young, he even visited Gojo and was surprised that the then-young sorcerer could see him, as Toji was known for being undetectable.

And while these powers made him a formidable character, it was not enough for his family. The Zenin Clan demanded more; they were an old conservative family, and in that aspect, Toji, despite all of his skills and abilities, was simply not good enough for them, and that is why he felt so utterly rejected by his family.

This, of course, all started when he was very young. Due to his condition, his family rejected him, and after accumulating resentment towards them for years, he simply left them one day, and it has been said that the fact that he decided not to kill them was a lucky coincidence for them, as he was at the time already capable of doing it with relative ease.

After leaving, he decided to become an assassin for hire, with his targets being jujutsu sorcerers. And while he did renounce the Zenin family name by leaving his family, it still doesn’t explain his new name.

But, not long after leaving his family, Toji met his first wife, a young woman whose last name was Fushiguro. The two of them married, and Toji decided to replace his former name with hers, thus becoming Toji Fushiguro.

The couple had one child, Megumi, who had a high potential of manifesting cursed energy. During this period, he even met with Naobito Zenin to tell him he would sell his son to the Zenin family if the boy’s cursed energy manifested itself.

The marriage was far from harmonious, and Toji never really had a normal relationship with his son; he even “forgot” who he was at one point, although this was a ruse because, when he was revived 12 years after his death, he recognized his son immediately and even sacrificed himself to save Megumi when he found out that Megumi had left the Zenin Clan, being somewhat proud of his action.

Megumi’s mother died at one point while Megumi was still a child, and while Toji kept his wife’s last name, her death was not a publically known fact, so Kong called him “Zenin” instead of “Fushigoro” when they saw each other for the first time. And with this, the mystery of Toji’s last name is solved.
