‘Jujutsu Kaisen’: How Did Tōji Foshiguro Die & Who Killed Him?

The characters we’ve seen in Jujutsu Kaisen are truly diverse and they come in all shapes and sizes. Some are more important, and some are less, but it is common knowledge that these characters are very intriguing, regardless of the role they are playing. One of these characters is Tōji Foshiguro, a supporting villain from the anime series who appeared in two arcs of the manga. Tōji Foshiguro is unique in many ways, and that is why fans have developed an interest in him, especially since he is bound to appear in the upcoming second season of Jujutsu Kaisen. In this article, we are going to tell you what you need to know about Tōji Foshiguro and who killed him in Jujutsu Kaisen.

Tōji Foshiguro was an enemy in the Gojō’s Past Arc, where he was the principal villain. He almost succeeded in killing Gojō himself, but he was ultimately defeated and killed by the world’s most powerful Jujutsu Sorcerer. Ogami later resurrected him in the body of her grandson, which is when he actually killed himself by killing his vessel, whose body he had taken over at one point during the Shibuya Incident Arc.

Tōji Foshiguro actually died twice, although the second time was a bit odd…

Tōji Foshiguro is Megumi’s father and a former member of the Zen’in Clan. Born as Tōji Zen’in, similar to Maki, he was born with a Heavenly Restriction, which rendered him completely devoid of cursed energy. In exchange for this, he has gained superhuman physical abilities and highly developed senses, enabling him to see and sense cursed spirits.

While he was young, he even visited Gojō and was surprised that the then-young sorcerer could see him, as Tōji was known for being undetectable. But even that was not enough for the Zen’in Clan.

Rejected by his family for this condition, he simply left them one day, and many say that the fact that he decided not to kill them was a lucky coincidence for them, as Tōji would have been able to do it with ease. After leaving, he became a sorcerer assassin. He also met Megumi’s mother at one point, married her, and took her last name, becoming, thus, Tōji Fushiguro.

During this period, he even met with Naobito Zen’in to tell him that he would sell his son to the Zen’in family in the event that the boy’s cursed energy manifested itself. He left Megumi’s mother later and would re-marry, but he left his other child, a step-daughter named Tsumiki, as well and proceeded to live a life of his own, promising himself that he would never be proud of himself or anyone else for that matter.

His first major and biggest role in the series happened in the Gojō’s Past Arc, where he was the main villain. In the beginning, he was hired to assassinate Riko Amanai, who was under the protection of both Gojō and Getō, who he managed to defeat in their first encounter. He was even able to bring Gojō to the brink of death, and he was only saved by learning how to use the Reverse Cursed Technique, which allowed him to heal himself.

Tōji Fushiguro boasted enormous power during both fights. Against Satoru, he was able to demonstrate his speed and used his blind spot to attack him and slash his throat. In Getō’s case, he used his anger (because he shot Rika and told him that his best friend, referring to Gojō, was dead) to make him careless, but he did not kill him, being afraid that all of Getō’s curses would be released in the process. Later on, though, he faced a revived Gojō once again, and this time, he was easily overwhelmed.

Tōji wanted to take some time to develop a new approach for Gojō, but he was overwhelmed when Satoru combined his old techniques into a new one, the Hollow Technique: Purple.

With this technique, Tōji Fushiguro was (easily) killed by Gojō during their second meeting. Tōji Fushiguro, as he was dying, was then approached by Satoru, who asked him whether he had any last words; Tōji told him that Megumi was about to be sold to the Zen’in Clan and that he could do whatever he wanted with that piece of information. He then died; Gojō then proceeded to locate Megumi and tell him everything about his father.

Although dead, Tōji Fushiguro ended up making a surprise return during the Shibuya Incident Arc, when he was brought back to life by Ogami using her grandson as a host body so that he could kill the sorcerers, but things didn’t really go as planned for the old lady. Namely, Tōji Fushiguro quickly took control of the vessel and managed to break free of Ogami’s control, as the grandson lacked the necessary amount of cursed energy to control him, after which he killed the old woman.

Guided now only by the desire to kill, he eliminates Dagon, engages in the clash with other sorcerers, and confronts Megumi (who does not recognize him) until, realizing that his son has maintained his individuality outside the Zen’in Clan, he decides to kill himself, saving him. So, this is how he died the second time; as far as things stand, he’s gone for good now. Was he proud of Megumi at this point?

Perhaps, which would mean that he had broken the promise he had given himself, but that is of lesser importance and a matter of interpretation at this point.
