The end of The Walking Dead: Dead City’s first season was only the beginning of another long zombie saga, and AMC’s announcement of the spinoff’s renewal for a second season only confirms it. The first season ends with Negan imprisoned by The Dama and the leader of New Babylon plotting to come for her methane, meaning a big war is brewing. With so much to look forward to, fans wonder when season 2 of Dead City will premiere and what to expect.

During the San Diego Comic-Con on July 21, 2023, AMC announced that both Dead City and Daryl Dixon would get a second season. “We can’t wait to bring Dead City fans back to the epicenter of Manhattan for more zip-lining action with Maggie and Negan…” Dan McDermott, AMC’s entertainment president, said. The renewal set the spinoff up for a release in the summer of 2024.

Dan McDermott didn’t give away any details on the plot, but the finale of the first season gives fans a good idea of what to expect. The battle between New Babylon and The Sanctuary is bound to take center stage, with Negan’s probably leading another sanctuary once more. So, who else stars in the second season of Dead City, and why is Manhattan’s methane such an important resource? Let’s delve into it.

When will The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 2 be released?

Dead City Maggie and Negan

AMC didn’t give the exact release date for Dead City’s second season in the renewal announcement, but we believe it will be released in the summer of 2024, just like the first season.

“This next chapter in the Walking Dead Universe continues to thrive with a terrific inaugural season for Dead City and highly anticipated new journey for fan-favorite character Daryl Dixon coming in September. We can’t wait to bring Dead City fans back to the epicenter of Manhattan for more zip-lining action with Maggie and Negan. And, ahead of its debut, we’re thrilled to double down on Daryl as we bring the apocalypse to France, transforming Notre Dame, Pont du Gard and other iconic locales into an apocalyptic landscape unlike anything we’ve seen before,” Dan McDermott said.

AMC’s series of The Walking Dead spinoffs are being released back to back, with Dead City coming right after Fear of The Walking Dead, followed by Daryl Dixon.

The announcement also confirmed that Daryl Dixon, which premiers on September 10, 2023, will have as send season as well.

With Fear Of The Walking Dead canceled after eight seasons, the network could have room for an earlier release of Dead City.

We expect the second season of Dead City to hit the screens between May and August of 2024, subject to how the Hollywood writers’ and looming actors’ strikes turn out.

The Walking Dead’s Rick and Michonner Spinoff is also expected in 2024, so it might take Fear Of The Walking Dead’s slot in the tight schedule, but that doesn’t mean Dead City will be delayed.

Undead Walking Season Finale Dead City

Dan McDermott’s announcement mentioned zip-lining action, suggesting that Manhattan will still be the center stage for the second season of Dead City.

Our speculation, based on the final episode of Dead City’s first season, is that Season 2 will be a face-off between the leader of New Babylon (Jasmine Walker, and The Dama, who is the real leader of The Sanctuary.

The second season will likely see the leader of New Babylon sending her army to try and take control of Manhattan’s methane.

She confirmed it when she grilled Perlie Armstrong after he lied about killing Negan, confirming that she was more interested in the Methane than Negan.

Negan, on the other hand, ended up imprisoned by the Dama after it turned out that The Croat is not really in charge of Manhattan.

The Dama wanted Negan to return to his old self and become the leader of her residents on the island.

She believes Negan to be the strong leader the island needs to protect its vital position and resources, and is willing to manipulate him to bend to her will as she did with The Croat.

Negan had just told Ginny that he wasn’t who she thought he was before Maggie traded him for her son, meaning he may not be a changed man after all.

Therefore, Negan may become the leader of The Dama’s Sanctuary, possibly working with The Croat, which would make them the ultimate alliance of evil villains in the franchise.

Since Maggie also lives in New Babylon, the first season’s ending suggests that she and Negan could be fighting on opposite sides in the second season.

However, Negan could still decide to work for The Dama undercover, like he did for The Widow, and destroy her organization from within.

Perlie Armstrong, Ginny, and Maggie will therefore be the main forces for good in the second season, with Ginny likely playing a bigger role in the show.

Who will star in Dead City season 2?

The confirmed returnees in AMC’s renewal statement are Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Negan and Lauren Morgan as Maggie.

Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan are also part of the production team, as they direct part of the show.

Jasmine Walker as the leader of The New Babylon Federation, is the other character that will play a big role in the second season after making her short cameo in the Season one finale.

The main antagonist of the second season was also revealed to be The Dama, played by Lisa Emery.

The Dama is doing everything to get Negan to return to his evil self in order to recreate his iron-fisted empire in Manhattan.
