Is Suguru Getō Really Dead in Jujutsu Kaisen?

Despite already being dead at the beginning of Jujutsu Kaisen, Suguru Getō is an enormously important character in the story of Jujutsu Kaisen. A powerful Jujutsu Sorcerer and Gojo’s close friend, Suguru Getō, was killed by Gojo after his battle with Yuta, which he lost. Still, Suguru Getō is present even in the current narrative in Pseudo-Geto, which has people wondering whether Suguru Getō is dead.

From what we know, Suguru Getō is indeed dead in Jujutsu Kaisen. After losing to Yuta in Jujutsu Kaisen 0, he was finished off by Gojo, his former friend and classmate. Still, Suguru Getō “returns” in the main Jujutsu Kaisen narrative, although it turns out it is the villainous sorcerer Kenjaku who simply usurped Suguru Getō’s original body.

The rest of the article will be dedicated solely to Suguru Getō and his death in Jujutsu Kaisen. You’ll find out how Suguru Getō died, who killed him, and when the events we are talking about took place. Suguru Getō is a character with a great story, so the events surrounding his death are certainly of interest to fans. Beware, this article is going to be full of spoilers.

How did Getō die in Jujutsu Kaisen 0?

As we know, Suguru Geto’s story actually started in 2006, when he was first portrayed as a student of Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College. He was Gojo’s and Ieiri’s classmate, and the three of them were very close friends, despite Gojo and Geto occasionally clashing over ideological questions.

Namely, whereas Gojo thought that jujutsu sorcery should be devoid of all ideology, Geto firmly believed that jujutsu sorcerers existed to protect non-sorcerers and often acted as the moral compass of Gojo, whose behavior tended to be… well, not evil, but simply reckless.

This was best visible during the incident involving Riko Amanai, where Suguru Geto showed just how much he cared about her, a non-sorcerer, and how far he was willing to go to protect her. Discussing it with Gojo, he even decided to let Riko choose not to merge with Tengen, despite the fact that it might cause utter chaos in the jujutsu community.

He was, thus, willing to sacrifice himself and his own well-being for the sake of one girl, and that was Geto. Sounds strange, right? We know him as a guy who hates non-sorcerers, and yet this guy was ready to sacrifice the well-being of the whole community for the sake of one girl. So, what changed, and how?

Well, the first important event happened when Toji Fushiguro killed Riko right before Geto by shooting her in the head. Geto was furious and wanted to kill Toji, but he ended up being defeated. Later, he went to the building of the Time Vessel Association, where Gojo went to retrieve Riko’s body. A group of gathered believers applauded Gojo as he carried Riko’s corpse, effectively applauding her death and showing how vile and disgusting people could be. This shook Geto a bit, and while he wasn’t completely swayed, his ideology was not as firm as it was before.

As time passed, he and Gojo began to go on more and more individual missions, and while they remained friends, Geto began changing. He questioned his action and for whom he was doing it all, calling humans “monkeys” for the first time while he was still a student.

Still, he had not yet decided on his path at that time. It was a chance encounter with Yuki Tsukumo, who explained to him the true nature of curses and how they came to be, that ultimately showed Geto a new path – eliminating all non-sorcerers would solve the problem of curses.

And while he was unsure whether he hated humans at the time, an individual mission in which he witnessed people accusing two innocent and helpless girls of being monsters in a village changed him; seeing, once again, how disgusting people could be, he massacred the village, saved the girls and decided finally that he would create a world without non-sorcerers. This happened in 2007, and we will now tell you what happened ten years later.

In 2017, Suguru released a curse at an elementary school that swallowed two children. However, the curse is defeated by Yuta Okkotsu and Rika Orimoto. Some months later, Suguru goes to the Hapina Gallery to see the vengeful S-class spirit, Rika. Suguru releases a powerful spirit and makes it fight against Yuta and Toge Inumaki. After the two manage to defeat the curse, Suguru expresses his disappointment at Rika’s non-appearance.

Suguru also says that he will have to meet Yuta soon as he must return his student card, which one of his spirits stole. Afterward, Suguru returns to his base. A few days later, Suguru helps a woman cursed by a spirit. The woman expresses her gratitude for the curse being exorcised and leaving. Following this, Suguru expresses his distaste for non-exorcists.

Manami Suda shows up and informs him that his commanders have arrived. As Suguru and his comrade head to the meeting, one of Suguru’s donors, Kanemori, suddenly shows up. Kanemori complains that Suguru has to give him an exorcism since he gave so much to his sect, which Manami confirms before adding that he hasn’t donated for six months.

Suguru then kills Kanemori and heads for his meeting. Suguru meets up with his fellow Curse users and informs them that they will soon attack the Exorcism School.

Later, Suguru arrives at the school in Tokyo with his allies. He introduces himself to Yuta and reveals to him that he wishes to kill all non-exorcists to create a world only for exorcists, which Yuta disagrees with. The school staff suddenly show up and ask why Suguru is there. Suguru says he will release 2,000 spirits all over Japan on December 24. Suguru then leaves with his followers but leaves a few curses in the high school.

On December 24, Suguru arrives at the Tokyo Exorcism School to get Rika. Suguru kills all his opponents and puts up a curtain all around the school. Suguru then encounters Maki Zen’in, Panda, and Toge, whom he easily defeats. While Suguru is happy to see exorcists sacrificing themselves for more exorcises, Yuta shows up and then gets angry.

Suguru sends several curses on Yuta and Rika, but Yuta manages to fight back and save his friends as well as heal them. As Yuta returns to battle, Suguru releases more spirits, but Yuta uses Rika’s power to defeat them.

Suguru manages to understand what Rika’s power is and further expresses his desire to possess her. Suguru then takes on Yuta in close combat and overpowers him, causing Rika to pull Yuta away from Suguru. While Suguru faces Yuta, the master of curses expresses his views on non-exorcists. Yuta rushes at Suguru, but the latter manages to break his sword.

After a brief conversation that the two have with each other, Suguru decides to use all his curses against Yuta and Rika through his Whirlwind technique. Yuta decides to fully unleash Rika’s power at the cost of his life, and both fire an energy beam powerful enough to exorcise all of Suguru’s blights and force the latter to retreat.

Suguru ends up with his right arm ripped off and expresses his desire to possess Rika. Suguru then meets Satoru, and the two begin to chat. Suguru returns Yuta’s student card to him before getting finished off.

After that, Satoru chooses not to donate Suguru’s body to the Exorcism School. This allows an entity named Kenjaku to take possession of Suguru’s corpse, reanimating him and giving him access to all of his abilities. The man who is now called “Suguru Getō” by many people is, in fact, an impostor (see below).

Why did Gojo kill Getō?

Gojo ultimately had to kill his friend because of two reasons. The first one was that Getō never really gave up his wrong ideals, despite losing the fight. In that aspect, had Gojo spared Getō’s life, the world of Jujutsu Sorcerers would ultimately have to fight against Getō once more, and we all know how tough of an opponent he was.

The second reason is that Getō was considered to be a criminal, and his crimes were irredeemable. Had Gojo captured him, he would’ve been executed anyhow, so it was a more poetic and fitting end for Getō to die at the hands of his close friend. Ultimately, it was a touching, yet just death, and it was the best way for Getō to leave the story.

What did Gojo tell Geto?

After losing to Yuta, Suguru hoped he would get another chance at absorbing Rika, but his former friend, Gojo, then confronts him. Gojo confirms all of Geto’s followers fled and admits that he trusted Geto enough not to injure young sorcerers like Panda and Toge. He gives Geto a chance for his last words, and the curse user admits he harbors no disdain for Jujutsu High, he simply couldn’t be happy in this world no matter what.

How is Getō present in Jujutsu Kaisen if he is dead?

If you’ve read our article carefully, you already know that Getō is 100% dead in Jujutsu Kaisen. So, how is the guy present in the main narrative? The catch is that he is not. His body is there, but Getō himself is dead; as we know, Gojo is well aware of that. The imposter in Getō’s body, also called Pseudo-Getō, is an ancient evil sorcerer called Kenjaku, the main antagonist of the series and a big-time powerful villain.
